Nemesis, a Character analysis

Image
Nemesis is the first book in a series by Brendan Reichs. The story takes place in a town called Fire Lake. It’s picturesque and quaint, a place someone may visit for vacation. However, it’s also secluded, bound to the outside by the single bridge known as the plank, and what’s going on in secret is far from pretty. The book starts out with the point of view of Min. She has lived her whole life in this town and has died there 4 times. Since she turned 8, on her even numbered birthdays, she is found, is killed, and resets in the same spot in the forest. However, it was not till Min’s 16th birthday that the rest of the world started to fear for their lives, because a giant asteroid named the Anvil was discovered to have broken orbit and entered a possible collision course with Earth. With its size and its speed it could mean the end of the world. However, this news is only the beginning of the end of Min’s world as...

Fahreinheit 451 Review

In this review, I will talk about Fahreinheit 451, the reason why it was challenged, and my opinion on the book. No spoilers. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury revolves around a dystopian world where knowledge and thought is suppressed. TV rooms are used in order to entertain society in order to keep people from wanting to expand on their views and ideas. Any ownership of a book results in a house fire, burning everything in and out.  An interesting thing about this book is that it was challenged by a parent of a child on December 1, 2017, in the school district of Santa Rosa in Florida. The parents challenged the book because of the book’s profanity and using God’s name in vain. This, along with the book's glimpse on a world where possession of books are banned and thought is limited lead to the book being reviewed by a committee. After a review committee evaluation, a superintendent, who supported intellectual freedom, decided to retain the book in the school I believe that everyone...

The Giver Book Review

Over the past few weeks, I read the book The Giver , by Lois Lowry. This book is about a dystopian world that was completely altered after a war that destroyed almost everything. This book was narrated by Jonas, a teenage boy who is about to be given a profession. In this book, a profession is what a person is intended to do after they reach a certain age.      Towards the beginning of the book, we experience Jonah going through the "Ceremony of the Twelve", where the twelve-year-old boys get their professions. But after everyone else had gotten theirs, Jonah had not heard his name. There was one remaining profession that was not said: The Reciever. The receiver is the person that gets all of the memories from the time before the war; before everyone was exactly the same. However, this was not at all an easy job to fulfill. To be a receiver, you need to be prepared to see pictures of war that they had never experienced before, because of the ext...

The Good Earth Review by Taehan Lee

Image
I read The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. It follows the life story of a farmer who lives in rural china during the late 1800s an d early 1900s. It is considered a modern classic and I thought it was a great read!             The story starts from when we are to meet with his new wife and follows his life journey throughout the book. In the beginning the book seemed stretched, because there was no defined “conflict” within the book. During the first few chapters I kept looking for the main conflict, but as you go through the book it becomes clear that it isn’t about a single “conflict”, but a collection of small issues that create a man’s long and deep life. I enjoyed this book, because it was very realistic. The main character was not completely moral and was not a perfect human being. Instead, he was a realistic man who wanted to make a living with his crops and his land. He never does an...

More Than This book review

Image
More Than This is a book by Patrick Ness. The Main character is Seth. In the book Seth dies. His shoulder is ripped from it’s socket by the sea's waves. His head is smashed into the cold hard rock by the unforgiving sea and he closes his eyes to this world for what should be the last time, knowing that he should never be able to open them again. However, he does open his eyes again, and what he sees is the suburban street in England that he used to live in when he was a little kid. At first he does not recognize the street, but pain stricken, thirsty, and covered in a strange metallic tape, he is drawn to the house he once lived in and as he stumbles inside, he is struck with a different kind of intense pain because he starts to remember some of the things he wished he still forgot. His family left that house for a reason and they had no intentions of returning. At first Seth focuses on survival in the eerily abandoned town even though he partially believes t...

Talibans in "I am Malala"

Image
Disclaimer: This may not be the most accurate description of the Taliban. This is only what I found online to get some backstory for the conflicts present in "I am Malala".      The book “I am Malala” is the story of a teenage girl, Malala Yousafzai. The author is Malala Yousafzai who has the same name as the character in the book, and Christina Lamb. Malala in the book is a student limited by her gender. Furthermore, the society she lives in has many restrictions on females and prioritizes sons. The book takes dives into terrorism and the fight for girls' education. While reading this book, I realized I needed some explanations and backstory for the conflicts. Malala is affected by terrorism and the rules put in place by the Taliban. I was completely uneducated on this topic and decided to look into it.      Taliban is a Sunni Islamic fundamentalist political movement, according to the internet, this means they are a group of Sunni (“the largest denominati...
