Top Gun: An American Story by Taehan

I read Top Gun: An American Story by Dan Pederson. No, it is not the book version of Top Gun the movie, but it is kind of related. It is a very neat book that covers a very interesting chapter of American military history.

The book is a story about the founding of the Top Gun program. The Top Gun program is a special academy for advanced pilots in the Navy. This academy was founded because the US was having a lot of trouble with its pilots in the Vietnam War. They were having a lot of planes being shot down, so this book revolved around the story of how the Top Gun program was founded and how it affected the Navy.

I really liked this book because it really told a true story, unlike the movie. It talked about the actual logistics of how this happened, instead of telling an exaggerated story about speed addicted pilots. Don’t get me wrong I love the movie, but it was also nice to have some actual historical information about the subject. But furthermore, it mixed this historic story with an interesting perspective. The story is written and told in the voice of Dan Pedersen, the founder of the Top Gun Academy. This mix between real history and personal voice really made this book fun to read. Also, it has amazing cover art. I would recommend this book 10/10 for anyone who is interested in Naval fighter pilot stuff, as well as anyone who wants to know some truth about the Top Gun academy.

  1. I find it interesting that this book about the program was written by the founder of the program. It could be cool to see what the founder actually thinks of it, looking back.

  2. I've never heard of a top gun book and I never knew that much about top gun, least of all that it was a true story. I'll probably read this one.

  3. This book sounds really interesting. I like the cover of the book because it provides a glimpse of what the book will be about. I think trying a book with some historical information may seem interesting. Nice post.

  4. That sounds like an interesting read. It seems like the book could even be a response to the movie. Instead of a glorification, it gives the actual details of the academy and how/why it was made. For many people, the film may be their only way of knowing about the academy. Maybe now people can know more of a true story about it with Pederson's book.

  5. This book sounds especially interesting because I find that in many history books the logistics aspect of any kind of military action is glossed over even though it is an extremely important part of the history.
