The Most Dangerous game

The Most Dangerous Game is a short story following the experience of big game hunter Rainsford on Ship-Trap Island. The story starts off with Rainsford and his friend Whitney on a yacht headed for Rio de Janeiro for jaguar hunting. As they discuss the philosophy of hunting, they notice that the sailors seem distressed as they pass an island called Ship-Trap Island. After hearing gunshots on the island, Rainsford falls off the ship trying to get a better look at what happened. Nobody notices him fall overboard and he ends up swimming to the island to save himself. When he wakes up, he notices signs of a large animal that had thrashed around and died. Despite the large scene and amounts of blood, he notices a .22 caliber cartridge, which if you don't know is a small round probably not suited for anything large. In an attempt to find civilization, he comes across the hunter house where he meets General Zaroff and Ivan. General Zaroff a cossack and expert hunter and Ivan his assistant live on the island hunting for sport. As they talk, General Zaroff reveals his thoughts on hunting, he says he is bored and wanted a more intelligent and difficult game to hunt thus leading him to buy the island. Through persistent curiosity, Rainsford finds out the "animal" he hunts were humans who crash or end up on the island, this leads to the main conflict of the story. Rainsford is to survive three days with the General trying to hunt him. That is where I am going to stop because of spoilers.

Personally, I enjoyed The Most Dangerous Game because of its suspenseful and almost horror-like action. Some other things to point out are its movie adaptation in 1932 and its 100% rating on rotten tomatoes if that is something you want to check out. As a read, it won't take up lots of your time and you will still have loads of fun so I recommend this short story.

  1. This world of the The Most Dangerous game looks exciting and suspenseful coming from a 1924 novel. I am intrigued how this man chase between the General and Rainsford will play out, so I have to check out this book and its movie adaptation soon.

  3. This sounds like a fantastic book, especially for one so old. From what I've read here, it's another book I'll have to get soon. I'm interested in seeing how Rainsford can escape the General, seeing as the General has been huting men for an undisclosed period of time.

  5. Great post! It is definitely a unique setup to a pretty typical "survive-or-die" thriller. From the beginning on the boat and such it sound like a boring philosophy-ish book but it clearly gets exciting, the kind of thing you could read in a day or two. I've also never seen a movie with over 80% on rotten tomatoes, I'll have to check that out too. You do a good job of making the book sound appealing to 2021 kids even though it was written in the 1920's.

  6. I read this story in 7th grade as well as watching the film, and while I liked the short story I was not a fan of the film. There is a new TV show based on the same story that I plan on watching because it has Christoph Waltz.
